All the people involved in bringing this film to life literally lived it all those years ago, and it's the reason "Straight Outta Compton" has such an impact. If we can't learn from our past, then it's clear we're doomed to repeat it.ĭiscussing shooting in Compton, the filmmakers remember what it was like during the aggressive war on drugs in the 1980s. It's an eerie sight to see the chaos in the street and us versus them mentality basically mirror the riots we've seen recently in cities like Baltimore and Ferguson, Missouri. Gary Gray as he talks about bringing the L.A. "When someone wants to step out and burn their own neighborhood, it's not because they want a free pair of shoes." This was only a couple of minutes long, but I could have listened to another hour of the original members of N.W.A. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren and DJ Yella recall their youth for a very brief moment here. Dre and Ice Cube reminiscing about taking to the stage all those years ago while talented young men act the scene out.ĭr. and their actor counterparts discuss the inception of the group and how it began at a nightclub in the 1980s. It's something every biopic Blu-ray needs: the actors and the people they portray together for a special feature. This is, for lack of a better term, really, really cool. The guys rap "Born and Raised in Compton" in this concert scene. Most of these are just a few seconds long, but there are a couple that showcase some great acting skills. Unlike most Blu-rays, every "Straight Outta Compton" special feature is worth watching, and each one includes interviews with members of N.W.A.ĭon't expect any earth-shattering scenes that add a crazy twist to the story.
